The 4th Annual UAE National Robotic Olympiad

The Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC), in special partnership with Edutech Middle East, is pleased to be hosting the 4th Annual National Robot Olympiad (NRO2009) on 27-28 September 2009.
NRO 2009 is a unique competition that asks students to explore the world of robot technology. On 27 September 2009, students from schools that have not previously used Lego Mindstorms NXT Robotics equipment will be given the opportunity to try it out. An Exploratory Day will be held and schools can nominate a maximum of two teams of students (4 students per team) to participate. Limited spaces are available and schools must apply to participate.
On 28 September, teams of students can participate in either of two categories of competition, Regular or Open. The Regular Competition occurs across three age levels, elementary, junior high and high. Please make sure that teams are entered into the correct level of competition. The Open Competition is open to teams from all age levels, though the competition will be conducted in the age levels previously mentioned with awards given at each age level. University and college students are also able to participate in the Open Category competing for separate awards. The age ranges for each level are available in the document below and a team cannot compete in both categories of competition. The theme for the 2009 competition is “Artist Robot”.
Each category has a strict set of rules that must be followed. These rules are the same as those used in international competition. The competition internationally is conducted in English though a bilingual (English/Arabic) approach is welcome for the National Robot Olympiad (however teams selected to represent the UAE internationally must be able to participate using English).
Based on the contestants’ innovative, creative and technological abilities (in line with the rules), a panel of judges will select the top team/s in each competition category. Awards will be presented to these teams. From these winning teams, the teams that will represent the UAE at the World Robot Olympiad (WRO2009) will be selected. The selection process will be based on the eligibility criteria as set by the WRO Committee. Students participating in the Exploratory Day will not be eligible for selection. An announcement of the teams representing the UAE at the World Robot Olympiad for 2009 will be made at the conclusion of the NRO on 28 September 2009.

The World Robot Olympiad (WRO) is a robot / design competition that involves many countries from the Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Europe as well as Central and South America. The Olympiad will be held from 06-08 November, 2009 in Gyeongbuk Pohang, South Korea.
The WRO is an annual event conducted under the auspices of the WRO Committee, comprising representatives from various countries. The WRO first began in 2004 in Singapore and has been held in Thailand, China, Taiwan, and Japan. Talented young robotics enthusiasts participate in the WRO to exhibit their robotics and creative skills to compete for the WRO Awards, in multiple categories. These participants are initially selected through “National Robot Olympiads” in their respective countries, and then sent to the WRO by the designated National Robotics Coordinators. The first UAE National Robot Olympiad was held in 2006 and led to the UAE participating in the WRO in Nanning, China.
